The
member elected from Dadra & Nasar
Haveli, thoush contested as independent
candidate is our own party man.
Three other members elected from
Maharashtra as candidate of our
alliance parties are continuins
as associated members of our
Parliamentary Party.
Assembly Performance
: 58
members were elected to the
Assembly from Maharashtra and
4 members to the Arunachal
Pradesh Assembly.
Our
performance in the Parliament
election : Our
performance in the elections
was not up to our expectations.
Before we could set up state
units, elections to Parliament
were announced. We had to contest
the elections without any organisational
set up. Neither did we have
the finances to face elections.
We had no alliance partners
also outside Maharashtra. The
goodwill of the party leaders
was the only asset of the party.
The hostile attitude of the
non-BJP and non-Congress(l)
parties to the NCP also contributed
to the poor performance of
the NCP in the Parliament elections.
The leaders of the prominent parties of the third front compromised either
with-BJP or with Congress (I) whom they had been opposing all along in
order to win a few seats for themselves with their help. This opportunistic
attitude of the third front parties and left parties was the root cause
for the poor performance of the third front parties at the national level.
Participation of Government
: In
order to prevent the formation
of government by Sivasena-BJP
combine, which had been voted
out by the people in the election
in Maharashtra, the NCP had
to join hands with the INC
in Maharashtra to form a coalition
government there with Shri
Chhagan Bhujbal as the Deputy
Chief Minister.
We
had to bow down to local political
pressure in Meghalaya and join
the coalition government led
by the UDP there despite the
three member BJP also being a
partner in the government, as
it was within the interest of
our party as well as that of
the state to provide a government
and avoid another election imposed
upon the state by our party's
stand. The party unit in Kerala
was already a part of the Left
Democratic Front and their Government
there.
After
the election in Manipur, some
our MLAs have joined the government
there.
Besides,
the party has its presence in
the following states :
| State |

| Arunachal
Pradesh |

58 |
