Parliamentary
Presence :
NCP has eight party members in the Lok Sabho and four members in the Rajya
Sabha.
Party is a partner in the coalition government in Maharashtra with our party
leader Shri Arun Gujrati as Speaker of Assembly and Shri Chhagan Bhujbol as
Deputy Chief Minister. In Meghalaya where we had been heading a coalition government
until the recenl elections to the assembly, now we are the major opposition
party in the assembly with sixteen MLAs. Besides, our party members were elected
to the State Assemblies of Kerala, Goo, Haryana, Uftaranchal, Manipur, Assam
and Arunachal Pradesh.
We contested the Assembly Elections also in Gujarat, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir,
Himachal Pradesh, Utrar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland and
Tamil Nadu. In Gujarat, though we could nol win any seat, we could collect
good number of votes in most of fhe constituencies and established the third
position in the state as a political party. We could collect decisive number
of votes in as many as 25 constituencies with fhe result that Congress(l) lost
in all fhose constituencies. We had offered to cooperate with all secular parties
including Congress(l) in Gujarat, so as to slop BJP coming back to power again
in Gujarat. The Congress(l) was defianf to any understanding with secular parties.
It was this attirude of the Congress (I) that helped BJP to come back to power
in Gujarat.
In
Meghalayo, where we had hoped
to be fhe leading group in the
Assembly, the manipulations and
me venomous propaganda made by
some vested interests affected
our chance, Bui 14 of our official
candidafes gol elected which
was two more than the number
we had in the dissolved assembly.
Now we have 16 members in the
Meghalaya Assembly wilh two independents
also in our Parliamentary group.
In
certain states like Nagaland,
we lost one seat by a small margin
of 34 votes. In many states,
we have contested local body
elections wifh some success.
In Maharashtra, we have emerged
as fhe leading parry securing
the highest number of seats in
fhe elections fo local bodies
including Zila Parishads leaving
all other national and regional
parties far behind.
We have our Mayor in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Recenly in fhe election
to fhe newly formed Municipal Council Kankavli, a strong hold of Sivosena
Chief, Rama, we have won with 15 seats out of the total of 17. We have
also won the control of the Gamner Municipal Council with 13 out of 20
seats. We have also won majority in the election fo the Pimpri Chanuchaud
Municipal Corporation.
We
have won all fhe bye-elecfions,
we contested in Maharashtra.
International Assignments
of our Leaders :
Shri Sharad Pawar's Assignments :
Our Presidenf Shri Sharad Pawar has great international acceptance and has
taken up many assignments abroad. He was invited to Washington to participate
in a conference on "The Role of New Technologies for Poverty Alleviation
and Sustainable Development".
He was member of a Parliamentary delegation to attend a conference of presiding
officers of the National Parliaments at the United Nations General Assembly,
New York.
He was a member of the Indian Parliamentary delegation to the 103rd Inter Parliamentary
union Conference in Amman, Jordan.
He was invited to attend the Microsoft Government Leaders' Conference at The
Westin, Seattle, USA.
He led the Indian Parliamentary delegation to Geneva to attend a conference
on "International Trade for a Free, just and Equitable and Multi-Lateral
Trading System : Providing a Parliamentary Dimension".
As Vice Chairman, National Committee on Dasaster Management, Hon'ble President,
NCP Shri Shared Pawar, MP led High Level Delegations to USA, Australia, New
Zealand, japan, Thailand, Singapore, Turkey and Switzerland between 2001 and
2003.
Shri
P.A. Sangma's Assignments :
Shri
P.A. Sangma had chaired the meeting
of the Commonwealth Observer group
constituted for the Presidential
elections in Gambia, a prestigious
assignment conferred on him by
the Secretary General of Commonwealth
countries.
Shri P.A.Sangma also attended an international conference on Federalism organised
by the Federal Council and Conference of Cantonal Governments of Switzerland
from 27th to 30th August, 2002. This was a prestigious conference, the plenary
of which was attended and addressed by several heads of Governments. He was
honoured in the conference by giving an opportunity to make a case statement
on India on the subject of tax competition and Tax cooperation.
In recognition of Shri Sangma's experience as Speaker and his constitutional
expertise, he had been nominated as one of the members of the 'Constitutional
Review Commission" headed by Justice Venkatachelliah. Shri Sangma had
made remarkable contribution to the deliberations of the Commission. But he
resigned from the 'Commission' when the Chairman of the Commission refused
to entertain a suggestion presented by him to bar people of foreign origin
From adorning the top most positions in the government.
Support for Adivasi Struggle for land :
Shri
P.A. Sangma had visited "Mulhanga" in
Kerala, where the police had
opened fire on the Adivasis,
who had been agitating for implementation
of the agreement, the Chief Minister
had made with the leaders of
Adivasi Gram Maha Sabha for distributing
land to the landless Advasi families
whose land had been a iionated
by powerful sections of the community
with the support of the parties
in power all these years after
independence, killing one on
the spot and a number of them
missing in the fares). This visit
was o boost to the Adivasi for
fight land and it gave their
struggle a national perspective.
Rashtrawadi
Sankalp :
A Party publication named 'Rashtrawadi Sankalp1, a Fornightly is being published
from New Delhi, the Chief Editor of which is Shri Tariq Anwar, Gen. Secy.,
NCP, Editor Shri Suraj Yadav, Gen. Secy. NYC and the Printer & Publisher
